About Darren Gallagher

Marketing should sit at the strategic heart of an organisation, not at its periphery.

My career has been shaped by that belief.

Over the past two decades, I have evolved from digital performance marketing and eCommerce roles into executive-level marketing leadership within SaaS environments.

Early Career: Digital & Commercial Foundations

My grounding was in digital performance, CRM and conversion-led marketing within consumer and travel brands including Viking River Cruises, For Goodness Shakes and Interflora.

Working agency-side at Organic exposed me to complex commercial environments and global brands including Samsung, National Trust, Nectar and The Body Shop.

These roles developed a strong foundation in accountability, stakeholder management and commercial delivery.

Leadership & Organisational Design

Senior roles within large institutions such as Exeter College and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council provided experience in restructuring teams, leading organisational change and operating alongside executive leadership during periods of complexity.

Here, marketing was not simply about promotion, it was about institutional positioning, leadership alignment and structural maturity.

SaaS & Executive Marketing Leadership

My focus in recent years has been SaaS.

At Patchworks, reporting directly to the CEO, I repositioned the brand, integrated marketing and sales alignment, and built a marketing team structured for scale.

Currently Director of Marketing at Unity5, I operate at the intersection of revenue strategy, marketing architecture and executive reporting.

Across each stage of my career, one theme has remained consistent:
Marketing must earn, and sustain, its seat at the strategic table.

Research & Long-Term Direction

Alongside my operating role, I am developing research into what I describe as the “CMO Credibility Gap”.

This work explores:

  • Executive self-efficacy in marketing leaders
  • Financial confidence and commercial fluency
  • CEO perceptions of marketing at board level
  • Structural barriers to C-suite progression

My long-term ambition is to operate as a CMO within high-growth SaaS businesses and, in time, to advise founders and investors on building marketing functions designed for sustainable scale.

Be More Present is the intellectual home of that work.
